Prevention Tip of the Week: The Three R’s of Safety

Recognize

Help your child recognize unsafe situations. On a regular basis, revisit safety rules and practice recognizing situations that are unsafe. Knowledge is power!

Report

Remind children to tell an adult they trust about any unsafe situations or broken safety rules as soon as they can. Telling a trusted adult is the best way for a child to get help. Help them identify who their trusted adults may be.

Refuse

Help your child come up with different ways of saying no to unsafe situations.  Come up with alternatives to "no" such as,

“Stop that’,

“I have a safety rule not to take my clothes off”, or

“I don’t want to do that”.

Help kids understand that they can say no, no matter what.
