Lesson Two - Cultural Issues

Cultural Issues

According to NCAND, the 2001 report indicates that 50% of child victims were white, 25% were African American, 14.5% were Hispanic, 2% American Indians and Alaska Natives and 1.3% were Asian-Pacific Islanders.

Guidelines

  1. Learn about the culture. Consult with others when you are unclear about cultural practices. The best source of knowledge can be the family in question.
  2. Examine differences between accepted cultural practices and the behavior at hand.
  3. Establish whether or not the alleged abusive behavior is truly harmful to others.
  4. Determine how much the person knows about American culture. Individuals who are not familiar with our cultural practices may not realize that their behavior is inappropriate.
  5. Do not report due to racial or cultural bias.
