Cultural Issues
According to NCAND, the 2001 report indicates
that 50% of child victims were white, 25% were African American, 14.5% were
Hispanic, 2% American Indians and Alaska Natives and 1.3% were Asian-Pacific
Islanders.
Guidelines
- Learn about the culture. Consult with others
when you are unclear about cultural practices. The best source of knowledge
can be the family in question.
- Examine differences between accepted cultural
practices and the behavior at hand.
- Establish whether or not the alleged abusive
behavior is truly harmful to others.
- Determine how much the person knows about
American culture. Individuals who are not familiar with our cultural practices
may not realize that their behavior is inappropriate.
- Do not report due to racial or cultural
bias.
