Signs of abuse

The signs and symptoms of abuse may include, but are not limited to, the following list. Please consult your doctor or a professional if you have concerns.

Behavioral Signs of Abuse

  • Child tells you
  • Regression of behaviors
  • Clinging
  • Disturbed sleep patterns
  • Constipation or refusal to have a bowel movement
  • Gagging without reason
  • Avoidance of undressing
  • Wearing extra layers of clothes
  • Decline in school performance/attendance
  • Withdrawal from activities previously enjoyed
  • Sudden change in personality
  • Inappropriate or sophisticated sexual behavior
  • Unusual or age inappropriate interest in sexual behaviors
  • Drawings of sexual acts
  • Persistent and inappropriate sexual play

Physical Signs of Abuse

  • Torn, stained or bloody underclothes
  • Pain while urinating or having bowel movements
  • Offensive genital odor
  • Genital infections
  • Symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases
  • Frequent unexplained sore throats or urinary tract infections
  • Abrasions, lesions, redness or bruising to genital or anal area
  • Difficulty walking or sitting
  • Excessive masturbation
  • Self-mutilation or harm
  • Symptoms of pregnancy
  • Unexplained health problems (stomachaches, headaches, muscle pain)
  • Substance abuse (drugs/alcohol)
