Volunteer:

CARE House Volunteers are special people who give the precious gift of time to make a difference in the life of a child. Without the thousands of hours contributed each year by its volunteers, far fewer children and families would be served. There are many volunteer opportunities at CARE House of Oakland County.

Stories:

There are countless stories of the children who have come to CARE House for hope and healing. These are stories of children who have found a safe place where their voices can be heard and believed. They are stories of courage overcoming fear, of pride overcoming shame. Each story is as unique as each child. Each journey has its own path.

CARE House Programs and Services

Change

CARE House is a safe place where a child's voice is heard.  It's a place where the darkness of abuse is brought into the light, where children are guilded along the path of healing.

Whether it’s at CARE House, inside the home of a vulnerable family, in a courtroom, at a school or another of its many community partners, CARE House provides a continuum of quality care for children and families:

  • From primary prevention, through educating groups of adults on our shared responsibility for child sexual abuse;
  • To advocacy, by being the voice for a child who’s the ward of the court due to abuse or neglect;
  • To teaching vulnerable families to be more nurturing, non-violent and empathetic;
  • To protecting children by intervening in cases of suspected abuse;
  • To providing healing therapeutic services for victims of abuse, through individual therapy and support groups;
  • To teaching young mothers the fundamentals of good parenting and the importance of giving their children a healthy start.

Over 5,000 individuals are served each year by these CARE House programs, all of which are provided at no cost to the children and families in need of these critical services.

Franklin's canine therapy brings joy to abused, neglected kids in Oakland County

The Detroit News.

Co-workers at Care House of Oakland County, a nonprofit serving abused and neglected children, describe the recent addition to the staff in glowing terms. “He is very intuitive.” He brings “joy wherever he goes.” He‘s “very trusting.”

Even Carol Furlong, executive director says: “It‘s like he has this sixth sense. He can sense when someone is having a bad day and he’ll want to connect. I swear I’ve never even heard him growl.”

Just when you want to say “I should hope not!,” you realize Furlong is talking about an 11-month-old Goldendoodle, that marvelous hybrid of a golden retriever and a poodle known for their intelligence, obedience and, most of all, their eagerness to please anyone and everyone.

As we moved into the new CARE House building in January 2011, the children and adults who found hope and healing at the old building were asked to write and draw on its walls, to say their good-byes and share their feelings.

These are some of their touching messages:

"In so many ways you've saved my life. If it wasn't for CARE House, I wouldn't be here today. Thank you."

"What would the world be without dreamers? You make a difference."

"The world breaks us. Some are stronger at the broken places."

 "I'm not a victim, I'm a survivor."

 "This is the first room where I had my sessions – I'll miss it – Bye Bye."

"Although it may seem you walk a path of darkness alone, you don't. Someone is right there with you. Never give up hope."

 "I'll remember you always even though you're gone."

"I look around this room and see all of the lives you have affected. You are a gift."

"You won't hurt forever."

"Some things are meant to be broken so others can put them back together."

"Will I forget CARE House? Not in my lifetime!"

"Words cannot describe or express our gratitude and appreciation."

"Challenge = growth."

"Life is beautiful!"

 "I survived...you can too. You're not alone."

 "I love you, CARE House. You made me smile again."
