History A valued part of the Council’s mission is collaboration. In 1977, a partnership of law enforcement agencies, the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, the Junior League of Birmingham, Children’s Protective Services and other community stakeholders formed the collaboration. The Council was the first in Oakland County to take a proactive approach in addressing the family violence issue of child abuse and neglect, and has continued that mission-critical tradition for nearly 30 years, with program and service goals modeling its core belief: It shouldn’t hurt to be child. A private, 501(c)(3) non-profit agency, the Council coordinates services solely for the advocacy, prevention, intervention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Protecting children and strengthening families are the overarching goals. All programs and services of CARE House of Oakland County (home of the Child Abuse and Neglect Council) are provided at no cost to the children and families it serves throughout Oakland County (population 1.2 million). |
